Devy 101: Drafting College Players in Dynasty

Devy — short for “developmental” — is dynasty taken to its extreme: you draft and roster players who are still in college, years before they reach the NFL. It’s the deepest, most patient corner of fantasy football, and it’s growing fast.

How devy works

On top of your NFL roster, a devy league gives you slots for college players. You hold them through their college careers and only “activate” them once they’re drafted into the NFL. Get it right and you own a future star a year or two before your rookie-draft rivals can touch him.

Why managers love it

  • Maximum edge. The earlier you can identify talent, the bigger the value gap over your league.
  • Deeper engagement. You’re watching college football with a GM’s eye.
  • Cheaper entry on stars. Locking a prospect in devy can cost far less than the eventual rookie-draft price.

The risk: variance is enormous

College production doesn’t always translate, injuries happen, and draft capital can crater a prospect you loved. Devy assets are lottery tickets — hold several, don’t marry any one.

How to scout for devy

Favor early breakout ages, dominant target or carry shares, and situations that project NFL opportunity. It’s the same lens as an early rookie watch — just applied a year or two sooner.

Is devy for you?

If you love the long game and the scouting grind, devy is the most rewarding format there is. If you want faster payoffs, standard dynasty is plenty.
