Dynasty Startup Draft Strategy for Beginners
Your first dynasty startup is the most important draft you’ll ever do in that league — you’re not building a team for one season, you’re setting up a franchise for years. That changes everything about how you draft.
Age matters more than you think
In redraft, a 30-year-old stud is fine. In dynasty, that same player might have one or two productive years before he’s a depreciating asset. Weight youth, especially at running back, where the cliff is steepest.
Decide your timeline before pick one
Are you building to contend immediately or accumulating young assets for a title in year two or three? Both work — but drafting half-in on each gets you a roster that’s too old to build and too young to win. Pick a lane.
Quarterbacks hold value longer
Especially in superflex, quarterbacks age gracefully and rarely lose their job to a committee. If your league starts two QBs, prioritize the position — the same logic that drives superflex draft strategy applies double in dynasty.
Don’t punt rookie picks
Rookie draft capital is the currency of dynasty. Even if you’re contending, holding a few young lottery tickets keeps your window open.
Dynasty value curves are steep and format-specific. Pressure-test your startup plan by running mock drafts against realistic ADP before the real thing.
