NFL Combine Preview: What Fantasy Managers Should Watch
The NFL Combine turns a scouting hunch into a stock swing. For dynasty managers building an early rookie watch list, it’s the first hard data point of the offseason. But not everything in Indianapolis matters for fantasy — here’s where to focus.
What actually predicts fantasy value
- Size-adjusted speed. A big receiver who runs fast, or a back who’s both quick and sturdy, clears a real athletic bar. Speed in context beats raw speed.
- Explosion (vertical, broad jump). These correlate with the burst that shows up as yards after catch and broken tackles.
- Agility for the position. Change-of-direction matters more for slot receivers and scat backs than for early-down bruisers.
What to mostly ignore
- Bench press for skill players — weakly related to production.
- Standalone 40 times with no size context — a fast small player isn’t automatically a fantasy asset.
The bigger truth: athletic profile is a filter, not a verdict
The combine confirms or questions a prospect’s tape — it doesn’t override opportunity. A great tester who lands behind an entrenched starter is still buried; a modest tester with a clear path can produce. Weight landing spot heavily once the draft happens.
How to use it in dynasty
Adjust tiers, not your whole board. A strong combine nudges a prospect up a tier; a poor one raises questions to resolve on draft night. Hold your rankings loosely until draft capital lands.
